外国語教育においては、コ ンピュータを利用した学習はCALL(Computer Assisted Language Learning) と呼ばれ、新し い学習環境として期待されている。

多数の正解例を少量のデータで簡単に表現する方法を編み 出し、正解一括表現法としてBUD(Basic Universal Description) を提案した。

Abstract:

Price lowering of personal computers, the advent of multimedia, and expansion of the internet in recent years have di used computers not only to oces, but also to schools and homes. In the eld of language education, learning which uses computers is called \CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning)" and is expected as a new learning environment.

One problem of present CALL systems is that software for CALL can attract learners only tem- porarily, making it hard to achieve continuous use. In order to maintain the interests of the learners, addition of the game's feature has long been viewed as a possible measure. Conventionally, the game and learning of such software were not well blended and could be replaced with other games or learn- ing. Learning tended to smell like a puerile trick, or lacked in fun as a game. This study made a trial of strengthening the tie between game and learning by employing the game's feature in the process of examining what learners have acquired. Based on this idea, English word software \Tangotch" was developed, and evaluated.

Another problem with current CALL systems is that it is dicult for such software to provide appropriate instruction according to learners' varying input. Although composition is seen as best in measuring real ability to write, conventional software centers on rearranging, lling, and selecting questions. All the correct answers are contained in those types of questions, taking advantage of their small numbers of answers. There are numerous number of correct answers in composition exercises, which has made possession of all sound unrealistic.

This study takes an approach of correcting learners' answers into the closest correct ones, taking advantage of their large numbers. It also worked out a method of expressing many correct answers compactly and easily, and proposed BUD(Basic Universal Description) as a multiple-unit notation. English composition correction software \Satto-Eisaku" was then developed and evaluated.

In this way, this study coped with CALL's diculty about continuous use by promoting learners' motivation, shedding new light into the employment of the feature of the game. It also dealt with the problem of diculty in providing appropriate instruction, by developing a method which enables proper answer processing even when the number of learners' input patterns is large. These constitute design and development of an interactive language learning system.
